In the heat of a typically scorching Shanghai Saturday, food lovers and local media gathered at The Chinoise Story for Best Food In China's summer cooking show, its second event of the year. Event host, award-winning The Chinoise Story, is a stylishly elegant restaurant in the Old Jinjiang Hotel compound, specializing in modern Shanghainese fare.

The Chinoise Story, located within the five-star Jin Jiang Hotel on Maoming South Road, is a joint venture between Tung Lok Group and Shanghai Jin Jiang International Group. The Jin Jiang International Group is a multi-national hospitality and finance corporation, operating over 300 luxury hotels in Mainland China, including Shanghai’s legendary Peace Hotel.

Certain restaurants maintain exclusivity with astronomical prices, an uptight atmosphere or an ultra-cool attitude, which can be quite off-putting if you just want an enjoyable meal. Vizcaya, on the other hand, is a comfortable resort whose only claim to being exclusive lies in its membership.

Along the west bank of the Hou Hai lakes glows a giant red chop that serves as the entrance marker to Ken de Rouge; the four month old fusion restaurant nestled between bars and curio shops. Fusion does not begin to do justice to this beautiful collage of Chinese architecture and Hutong styles nor the menu featuring some very non-Chinese items.

If you like things that go bump in the night…?

In many ways, the Whale Inside Dark restaurant, conveniently located at Jian Wai SOHO, defies the traditional measures by which one would rate a restaurant. For example, in terms of décor and food presentation, I am completely in the dark, and that is because patrons of Whale Inside Dark dine in complete darkness.
