Fish Nation – Chip Shop is meant for late night fun, and offers the best chips in town. Coupled with generous sizes of fish and sausage, one cannot expect to leave unsatisfied. Offering a cheap alternative to the rest of Sanlitun, this is a place not to miss, and a great pit stop to sober up.
As it is, promoters of “British food” (with added quotation mark hand gestures as an extra snub) are few and far between, and no more so than in China where talk of shepherds pie, Cornish pasties and cream teas are met with at best a polite doubtful smile and at worst an undisguised grimace.
Now I’m no jingoist but after some time barren of culinary home comforts, I recall my first sight of Fish Nation in Nanluoguxiang’s tourist alley several years back left me in a state of breathless excitement that is perhaps indecent when reserved for food.
The Bulldog Pub has been a fixture of the Shanghai scene for more years than most. It has changed hands a few times but it has always brought Shanghai expats and locals alike a flavour of Britain.
