The restaurant décor is minimalist but elegant. The restaurant owner, a Dongbei native with a passion for southern cuisine, does not need to divert diners’ attention from the food with tacky ostentation or attempting to copy an inn from the Three Kingdoms. Here the focus is on the food and making an exciting dining experience.
Sichuan-fusion with a classy dressing of red chilies has again appeared in Shanghai (Across from Big Thumb Plaza in Lian Yang Plaza - Pu Dong).
At the end of a wall of high-end wines was South Beauty’s welcoming waterfall and its classic emblem, the serene Beijing Opera mask. Sichuan Court is located on the 39th floor of the Hilton hotel. Walking out of the lift, I could already smell the fragrances of Sichuan wafting towards me, and entering the restaurant was almost like stepping back in time to an Imperial Court, as its name suggests, where high ranking officials feasted on Chinese fine dining. Guzhen music, Tang dynasty stone horses, and authentic costumes fostered a traditional and intimate Chinese atmosphere.
LAN Club Shanghai brings a unique, upscale contemporary option to the Bund dining scene. Instead of focusing on riverfront views, like many establishments in this area, they focus more on the interior design of the restaurant. Ask any native of Sichuan province where to find authentic Sichuan cuisine in Beijing and you will be met with arched eyebrows. It is a truth universally acknowledged by Sichuan migrants to the capital, that real, down-home cooking is nowhere to be had. Press them and they might reel off a well-known short list of places that prepare acceptable imitations.
