Awana is a restaurant that has its roots in London and partial backing from the Malaysian tourism board, and no effort has been spared in recreating the success of that first establishment here in Beijing. The chef from the London branch, a native Malaysian, comes every 3 months to train the kitchen staff. The majority of ingredients are imported to preserve authenticity. And it has the toughest bunch of critics – the Malaysian embassy is around the corner. That it’s crowded with them nightly between 7 and 9 means something is being done right.
