If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… and that’s a saying that Mexican Wave has kept to. Since 1989, this casual dining restaurant has been a main-stayer amongst Beijing’s meteoric change, still in the same location and owned by the same owners. Perhaps that’s the reason for its old-fashioned décor and MOR (middle of the road) style music playing over the loud speakers, but it has its charm and that’s what keeps customers coming back and loving its familiarity.
Like the décor the food is tasty and comforting. Nothing too authentic, more of your Tex/Mex variety and all your traditional favourites are there – nachos, burritos, tacos etc.
First up, a twist on the salade niçoise, with tuna, green beans, roasted cherry tomatoes, olives, onions, cos lettuce and a hard-boiled egg. Comfortably warm and large enough to share between two or three or to have on your own, it’s a great starter that isn’t too spicy with the right amount of vinegar albeit a bit too oily.
The DIY fajitas are a Mexican Wave favourite with the ingredients served individually allowing you to create as little or as much as you like. The chicken fajitas come served on a sizzling Mongolian plate - adding a cute Chinese touch to the Mexican surroundings - served on a bed of onions, green and red peppers and chunky rectangular strips of tomato. Condiments include sour cream, guacamole, salsa, rice and mashed kidney beans all to add and wrap up in the warm homemade flour tortillas. Choose between chicken, lamb or beef and load up!
The Mexican Wave Special Pizza is a twist on the regular circular pizza base looking more like a calzone although not as thick. Inside is a cheesy cheesy surprise, with crispy onions, green peppers, and tomato sauce. I would have preferred the outside to be crispier to balance out the soft inside, but nevertheless a very filling and satisfying dish.
Finally, what would a Mexican meal be without the drinks to accompany it. With a large selection of cocktails and a range of tequila it’s a great addition to a casual, fun and cheap dining experience between friends.
