Good Greek food should have three qualities. First and foremost, it should be smelly and delicious with a taste that won't leave your mouth (no matter how much your date objects). Second, it should be filling, with big portions to feed friends and family alike. Finally, and what many Greek eateries in the area seem to forget, it’s supposed to be cheap. Greek Taverna gets the mix down perfectly.

Located on Hongmei Lu, the Taverna is decorated splendidly with a simple palate of blue and white preparing one for the authentic Greek cuisine to come. Despite the simple decorations, cheap prices, and pervasive sounds of children playing, the food is amazing and truly first-class.

The reason they can afford to keep the prices so low is because they use local meat and dairy, making their own feta-cheese from a contracted goat farm. The savings are passed down to the customer, but the quality is unaffected. The meals taste like they are flown in fresh from Greece itself.

You should start out with, unsurprisingly, the Greek salad. The salad tantalizes the taste buds with its monumental amalgamation of olives, salad, onion, and more. In addition, it is pretty much a steal at only 40 RMB. Make sure you get every last bit of Feta cheese in there. I personally preferred the homemade cheese in the salad to the separate side dish of Feta (30 RMB). However, it was still nice to get some of that unique Greek-style cheese in the stomach.

You might want to order two dishes of Tzaziki (25 RMB). It's so good and cheap that only one is hardly enough. It's delectable; a tangy taste the tongue instantly recognizes. It's also a perfect accompaniment to the warm and home-baked pita bread. My choice of the night was the classic Mousaka. It's an amazing heap of eggplant, potato, and ground beef. It tastes like a cheeseburger, mixed with a giant French fry, toppled upon crispy eggplant. Once you tire of the salty delicacies, make sure you hit up the homemade desert booth for some Baklava.

Though the food is fantastic, the restaurant does have a few downsides. The downstairs dining room gets drafty so make sure you bring a sweater if you're visiting in the winter months. The Greek Taverna also practices what I like to call “pro-active ordering,” meaning if you want something you might have to holler to get a waiter’s attention. However, despite these negatives, the food and the price make Greek Taverna a wonderful destination for the Mediterranean inclined.
