Best Food In China

Location

I had reasonably high expectations going into this restaurant, already being a fan myself of both Room28 and the Wagas chain.
And for the first time in a while on the Shanghai restaurant scene, my expectations were not only met, but exceeded.

A little info on the place as provided by the very approachable manager Franck; Bistrow at Grand Gateway is one of two locations, the other being in far flung MinHang.

It has become a favourite spot for expats and their families, both because of the high quality of the food and the family/business/casual dining friendly environment. There is a high rate of return customers as well, which always a good indicator.

From my point of view I found the whole environment quite appealing. Service was on time, friendly and competent with staff having a good handle of English (a rare combination in Shanghai). The décor was modern but at the same time retaining warmth and with music at just the right level to be present but not to interfere.

Finally the food; We started off at our waiter’s suggestion of the House Pate (58kuai), made on premises it was a rich and creamy example well matched with our glass of Argentinean Malbec.

For my mains I had the Bistrow Burger (85kuai), for all you burger aficionados out there (I’m a big one) I can really recommend this; good quality beef patty, cooked exactly the way you ask for it, other fillings all totally fresh and the key ingredient for a good burger BEETROOT! (for those of you scratching your heads, find a kiwi or an ozzie and ask them).

Although already stuffed, we finished off with a beautifully finished lemon meringue tart; light meringue with zesty lemony filling that was well balanced and not over sweet.

So in summary; if you are looking for well executed bistro fare serve by smiling and competent staff, jump on line 1 to Xujiahui get out at exit 12 and enjoy!

Tip: try the set dinner menu, only 138yuan with choice of starter, main and desert. Bargain!
