JC Chinoise

After you touch the crystal ball outside, the main doors slide open and you’re welcomed by a waitress who leads you through a bamboo maze into a library. Search the bookshelves to find the hidden button that opens up the bookcase to reveal a hidden passage into the restaurant. This has to be one of the most novel entrances to a restaurant I’ve ever experienced. However, the décor does not end there. The bar area is littered with antiques and in the private rooms antique bird cages have been turned into lamp shades. There is even a shark tank, that’s right a shark tank!, splitting the two floors of the restaurant.

JC Chincise is a fusion restaurant that mixes Japanese with Chinese cuisine but it also draws influence from other southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam. This chic restaurant is very elaborately decorated. The interior, on the one hand, reminds me of an old fashioned house with bookcases and antiques and on the other it’s ultra modern with a shark tank on the ceiling and excellent lighting used to create a great atmosphere.

The Japanese chefs serve up all the usual Japanese food you would expect – sushi, sashimi and tempura. The fish, specially imported from Japan, dissolves in the mouth and, compared to some Japanese restaurants in the city, it is of excellent quality. The set menus offer a good variety of dishes and have something to suit everyone. The beef in a gravy sauce is extremely tasty as are the sushi roles - they melt in your month after just one bite!

The presentation of the food goes along the same lines as the rest of the restaurant, slick and very pleasing to the eye. As for the staff, they are very friendly and eager to help.

This restaurant, although a little on the expensive side, serves food that is of excellent quality and is worth visiting, even if only to see the decorations.
