Although situated inside the splendid Bao Da Xiang Department store, the restaurant outshines its parent building especially on the newly decorated eighth floor.
This restaurant is renowned throughout the city as the finest purveyor of Beijing food adapted to suit Shanghainese tastes. This is exemplified by Yan Yun Lou's Duck's paw in wasabi, which has a remarkable taste. The sesame sauce contains a slightly tingling hint of wasabi, providing an exquisite finishing touch to this excellent dish. Other stand-out dishes here include Fried fish fillets pickled in wine, with its rich aroma of rice wine. The exquisirely cooked Braised shrimps is highly flavoured, largely due to its flesh and high quality ingredients. The shrimps are resilient but not as spicy as those in Sichuan food?making them perfectly suited to Shanghai palates. As is the sea cucumber braised in scallions - expertly fried with shallots giving it a velvety taste with a rich and alluring aroma. Some of the dim sum on offer are particularly colourful and enticing too.
