A perfect place to begin a night, start the morning or just wile away the day with a cup of coffee and slice of monkey cake!!
If my time in China has taught me one thing and one thing only, it’s that the customer is absolutely not always right! A mere three months into my stay here and any prior expectations of customer care had been well and truly shattered! That was, still the case, up until only two nights ago where one meal at “Steak and Eggs” instantly restored my faith in service.
Paul, the Canadian manager at “Steak & Eggs”, has an obvious hands-on approach to the running of his restaurant; he greets every customer with a smile, over sees the orders and checks the quality of food as well as personally enquiring into the overall satisfaction with all aspects of your meal. He even goes so far as to check the music being played is to your taste - It is undoubtedly apparent that he has a genuine interest in making this an ideal experience for all of his diners.
The restaurants’ decor is unpretentious; there are no flashing lights or marble floors. Instead, only a few modest hangings on the wall, which add to the stripped down homely feel of the place. But, don’t be fooled by the simple decorations of the restaurant (you used the word place twice), as this is no indication of the investment made in the quality and quantity of your meal.
The menu is extensive, catering for all the three main meals, of the day, as well as boasting an impressive list of baked goods and drinks. The dishes all originate from Paul’s own, homemade recipes and therefore all have an added Canadian twinge; pancakes with syrup and Angus steak shipped all the way from Canada. I was advised to try the garlic prawns for a starter followed by the rib eye Angus steak (139RMB) and lemon chicken (58RMB) for the main. The food was fresh and made to order and, for each main meal, there is an option of two extra sidesdishes of your choice, allowing diners to individualize their meal. There was no skimping on quality or quantity and, although I was left feeling more than satisfied from my main, I couldn’t resist a taste of the recently invented “chocolate monkey pie”, a chocolate mousse/banaoffee pie/chocolate/chocolate/chocolate heaven!
If the fact that “Steak & Eggs” is a true home away from home, run by one of the friendliest guys I have ever met, is not incentive enough to make a trip here, then maybe you will be enticed by the great value for money. Not only is it more than possible to eat (and eat well) for under 100RMB there are also a selection of (good) red and white wines costing either 69 or 135 RMB making it a perfect place to begin a night, start the morning or just wile away a day with a cup of coffee and a slice of chocolate monkey pie!!
