Yes, that’s right, everyday can be USA on Hengshan Road, as this newly opened American diner on one of Shanghai’s main restaurant and bar proves.

On the same site as the old TGI Friday’s, this sizable restaurant is everything you would expect an American themed diner to be, with red and white checked table clothes and what would best described as ‘authentic’ American memorabilia covering the walls. The menu serves everything from ribs to pasta and Tex-mex to burgers and there are plenty of drinks to choose from to help wash down the massive portions.

To start the meal we had the appetizer combo (68/128rmb), which included potato skins filled with cheese, mozzarella sticks, some very spicy chicken wings and three different types of dip for each of their respective accompaniments. All were excellent, but I have to say the chicken wings had somewhat of a peculiar flavour that will perhaps not be to everyone’s liking.

American salads are infamous for being very tasty but also not the healthiest in the world and the crispy fried chicken salad (88rmb) was no exception. The fresh crispy lettuce, tomatoes and eggs were placed beneath an unhealthily large number of fried chicken pieces and covered in an extremely more-ish honey mustard sauce. This is sure to expand the waist band, but at least you don’t feel too guilty doing it.

Then came an American favourite: the Tex-mex chicken quesadillas (88rmb). Although maybe not the tastiest I’ve had, they were bursting with filling and served with plenty of salsa, guacamole and sour cream.

I’m a big fan of ribs, but all too often I find them a disappointment. This was not the case with the rack of barbecued ribs (88/158rmb). They were excellent. The meat just fell off the bone and the thick black apple and butter barbecue sauce added to their flavour.

What we had already eaten was easily enough for my two dinner partners and I, but we battled on. For dessert we tried the choco choco pie (58rmb). This was a mound of coffee ice cream covered in almonds and lots and lots of chocolate and toffee sauce. This was very tasty but, even amongst three people, it was a struggle. It was just a few mouthfuls too far.

Everyday USA is a good option for unhealthy American dining. Even though it is not that cheap, the very large portion sizes help to somewhat made up for this shortcoming. If you’re looking for a relaxed meal with your friends or somewhere good for the kids, then this isn’t a bad choice.
